Featured Artist: MedusaDollmaker
Where are you from?
MD: I'm from Valencia, Spain. Living now in a small village with my boyfriend and our two cat-daughters.
What's the origin of your artist name?
MD: My total love for mythology and legends. Letting no magic die.
How would you best describe your art style?
MD: Eclectic, engraving-nouveau vintage with a taste of rustic. I love to bring several topics, even the contemporary ones, into old style. Lots of filigree everywhere.
Where do you find your inspiration when creating your art?
MD: Old engraving books, NATURE, nature indeed, music, art. Also in my environment. I need a balanced space to find the quiet and stillness I need for work.
When did you know you wanted to make a career in the art world?
MD: Since I was a child I guess!
What does a day of creating artwork look like for you and how to you start your creative process?
MD: After answering e-mails and contacting clients, I start checking the schedule to organize my day. I work first on commissions, and in my spare time, I work my personal works. I usually work until my bf is back from work, so we can chat for a while. I continue working until night.
What artist (either current or past) do you most admire and why?
MD: Woof. I'm such an admirer so I admire all the time. I admire Klimt, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci. I admire Josep Segrelles, Goya and Luis Ricardo Falero. Mucha, Gustave Doré, Aaron Horkey, Richey Becket.... Also ancient art and sculpture inspires me a lot.
What's the best advice that's been given to you as an artist?
MD: "When you sculpt you learn volume, and that's not only related to sculpture, you can bring up your two dimensioned art and touch it. When you sculpt you're responsible now for the unseen sides of your illustrations, for every connection between joints, angles and stuff" I think it was something like that. After thinking in 2D art as 3D art and working on sculpture, I learned a lot to apply on my own work, the volumes and the shadows and highlights it needed to stop being too much plain.
