Featured Artist: Jay Fleck
DBH: Where are you from? I'm from the suburbs of Chicago.
DBH: How would you best describe your art style? Fun, whimsical compositions typically featuring animals.
DBH: Where do you find your inspiration when creating your art? I’m always looking for inspiration. I can be walking down the street, out shopping, playing with my children- inspiration can spark anywhere at anytime.
DBH: When did you know you wanted to make a career in the art world? When people started to tell me that I had talent and my work had merit I thought there was a remote possibility that I could make something of it. Then when people actually started spending their money to purchase my work--I knew then that I definitely wanted it to become my career.
DBH: What does a day of creating artwork look like for you and how to you start your creative process? I start my day surfing the internet. First just the news, Facebook, other frivolous stuff. Then I try to get into the creative mindset--I look at design blogs, inspiration sites, etc.. And then I jump into whatever my work is on that particular day. I might have pages due for a children's book, a commissioned illustration, or maybe I just want to do something for fun.
DBH: What artist do you most admire and why? I've always been a big fan of Saul Bass. He was able to convey so much in such a minimal, perfect way. It's really hard to distill large concepts into clean, simple work that still retains and expresses the larger concept. He was the master at that and so much of his work is iconic for good reason.
DBH: What's the best advice that's been given to you as an artist? Just keep creating. If you're posting your work to social media and are frustrated that no one is noticing--just keep posting. Eventually your audience will find you. And each and everything that you create adds to your overall body of work and makes you a better artist. It doesn't matter if you think it's your best work, or any good at all, it's still worth creating.
