El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican and Latin American celebration to remember those who have departed from Earth. It is believed that the spirits of the dead visit their families on October 31st - November 1st and leave on November 2nd. Families and friends gather to pray for and honor their loved ones while offering gifts (ofrendas) such as marigolds, sugar skulls, candles and incense on their altars. The most familiar symbol and piece of art associated with El Dia De Los Muertos is the calavera (skull), which appear everywhere during this celebration - in sweets and candies, as costumes and masks and more. These calaveras are almost always portrayed as enjoying life and living alongside death (not in fear of it). Artists here at Design By Humans have been busy creating elaborate and beautiful works of art honoring this traditional holiday - check out the designs below and let us know which is your favorite!
