Artist Mini-Interview
Time for another installment of our Artist Mini-Interviews! Design by Humans has so many wonderful artists in our collective and so many amazing pieces of art. Ever wondered what an artist was thinking when they created a certain piece? We asked our collective to choose their personal favorite designs and tell us how the design came to be. Due to the high number of responses, we are going to split this into two parts, so stay tuned!
"My personal favorite so far is ZomBeethoven. The design brings nostalgia to me since the idea had been drawn on my sketchbook 3 years ago and I decided to revisit it and redraw it. As a milestone, redrawing it definitely told me how much I've improved over the years."

"I'd always wanted to have a tame bear. Totem Bear represents strength and power. A great source for motivation and inspiration! I'm inspired by nature. It's harmoniously fragile beauty and animal rage. So often in my work there is an animal theme and inner fire."

"Not only is [The Lake in Fall] the most different piece in my collection, it is has the oldest roots and influence. It was inspired back in college nearly 20 years ago by a small lake where I would go to take photographs and at the time I was inspired by the artist Barnet Newman's 'zip' paintings."

"I'd have to say my favorite is Kulture Couture. It's not my most popular design by a long shot, but I feel like it's the strongest in terms of communicative value, and I really like it's simplicity. I'm still trying to replicate that feel in my other works."

"A Cold Welcome, my zombie-themed tee, is my favorite design in my store. It's the first tee shirt that a fan posted on Twitter, and to top it off, he was posing with actor Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) from The Walking Dead!"

"My design Soul Singer means a lot to me. There are a lot of hidden and encrypted messages inside the singer's hair. Personal and inspirational messages. This is also the drawing that allowed me to be a full time artist. The more you look, the more you see."

"Besides becoming my most popular work, [Sushi Bar: The point of Nori-turn] has become my favourite as it exemplifies everything that I love about design: creating works that someone can sit back and unravel with their eyes. The appreciation for this piece has been moving."

"All You Need is Love. This calligraphic illustration was one of first from our workshop. This design gave us the best view of what could be the next part of our illustration life. It's more than only drawn words, its a combination of exploration of our experience. In that way we prepare set of hand drawn quotes design. They will be uploaded gradually to the DBH collection."

"Chaos Thinking has always been a personal artwork I've done in the past three years that is close to my heart because I did discover that I can create a style that kind of mimics my own personality and personal experience in life. For the past four years of my life there were a lot of ups and downs and personal inner demon battles I have had to pursue and learn how to deal with it. The good thing about it is that I've learned so much and every time I looked at this artwork it always give me a positive outlook in life."
