ThorReyes, or Hector Reyes, is a 25-year-old independent artist living in the Philippines. He recounts that he lost his job during the 2020 economic downturn, but that he was able to pivot to freelance work and now supports himself fulltime with his artwork. He primarily uses Vector art to bring his watercolor style to life on the digital page. He focuses on watercolor designs blended with hints of retro elements, as well as his Filipino heritage.
However, his main inspiration is the natural world; he showcases endangered and extinct animals as a gesture to his passion for environmental protection. He says, “I’m also an advocate of environmental awareness so most of my art promotes environmental care.” His beautifully-crafted animals – like a polar bear sitting on an ice cap – or vivid natural scenes, are a reminder of vulnerable habitats and the species around us that require our protection.
ThorReyes encourages other artists to step away from their artwork if they are experiencing creative blocks. He admits, “my greatest struggle is when my body feels that I'm not in the mood to draw although I have lots of ideas.” He believes that creativity is “the ability for us humans to create something beautiful regardless of the form of art.” He respects that beauty, in any form, is a true sign of creativity.
ThorReyes is excited to be named DBH’s Featured Artist of the Week; he believes that moments like this are a way to track his progress and evolution as an artist.
