In an unexpected blend of science fiction meets classic mythology, Erixultrasonic’s art introduces his audience to a futuristic world filled with robots, aliens, and cyborg animals. His unusual creatures are a vision of a new space age that borrow from ancient stories like the Egyptian god of the dead, Anubis, or an Oni mask from Japanese folklore. At first glance, Erixultrasonic’s bizarre world feels like the edge of society in a dystopian future; however, the familiar elements hidden beneath the brightly colored avant-garde designs also leave audiences with a desire to explore this strange, yet familiar, new world.
Erixultrasonic, or Taufiq Eri Wibowo, is a 35-year-old artist living in Indonesia. He shares, “I like fantasy things like mecha, monsters and mythology.” His artwork is heavily influenced by the mecha genre and his designs mirror the symmetry and precision of a robotic invention. He confesses that one of his most challenging obstacles is a simple one and that “introducing my new artwork” to other people is stressful. He recognizes that sharing one’s designs can be difficult but that it’s a necessary step in becoming an artist.
Erixultrasonic considers a “good attitude” to be the most important quality for any artist. He believes that it is both necessary for creativity, as well as for the motivation that an artist needs to succeed in their career. Still, more than anything though, he reminds other artists that art is supposed to be “fun.”
